Hospice provides specialized care and support for people approaching the end of life and for the people who care about them. The focus shifts from trying to cure the underlying terminal illness to comfort, quality of life, and relief of pain and other symptoms<\/strong>.<\/p>

Hospice organizations have their own medical directors. A person can be referred to hospice by their physician, or self-refer and ask to be assessed\u00a0for enrollment.\u00a0<\/p>

Hospice care is often provided wherever a person calls home, including a private residence, assisted living community, or nursing facility. Depending on a person\u2019s needs and circumstances, care may also be provided in an inpatient setting.<\/p>

Hospice care may include:<\/p>

  • Medications and medical equipment related to comfort and symptom management.<\/li>
  • Hospice aide and homemaker services.<\/li>

    For people covered by Medicare, hospice eligibility generally requires certification that the person has a life expectancy of six months or less if the terminal illness follows its normal course.
