Throughout this website choosing to end life, sometimes called early exit or self-deliverance or \u00a0other such term, always excludes ending life by violent means and by reason of depression and insanity.\u00a0 Legally, they are all suicide.\u00a0 The right-to-die movement has not yet accepted a term to distinguish between the two.\u00a0 Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) laws, discussed below, in fact say that assisted DEATHS occurring within the terms of the LAWS are not suicide<\/em>.\u00a0 But the MAiD laws don\u2019t say what it is!<\/p>

There are many reasons why people, especially people near the end of their life anyway, choose not to wait for nature to take it course.\u00a0 These reasons include:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

  • When doctors have determined that your illness cannot be cured, and your quality life will continue to decline. For example:\n\t <\/li>\n

    • Unremitting pain from disease. <\/li> \n
    • Loss of one or more of your five senses.<\/li> \n
    • Existential suffering (a distress arising from an inner realization that life has lost its meaning). \n <\/li> \n<\/ul>\n
    • When you can\u2019t do certain activities important to you. Examples are:<\/li>\n

      • You can\u2019t get out of bed, or go to the bathroom on your own.<\/li>\n
      • You are incontinent, especially your bowels.<\/li>\n <\/ul>\n
      • When you have dementia but have not yet lost mental capacity, and you want to prevent yourself from such personality changes as the following:<\/li> \n
        • You don\u2019t recognize your familiy.<\/li>\n
        • You don\u2019t understand the simplest things. <\/li>\n
        • Your personality changes and you are difficult, even abusive. <\/li>\n
        • When you are elderly.<\/li>

          As of October 2026, 1\/3rd of the U.S. population will have access to MAiD where a doctor may legally give you a lethal prescription, IF you qualify.\u00a0 As of Fall 2023 these state laws have different names.\u00a0 The first such law was adopted in Oregon in 1997 with the name the Death With Dignity Act.\u00a0 Since then these states, California (2015), Colorado (2016), Delaware (2025), Hawai’i (2018), Illinois (2025), Maine (2019), New Jersey (2019), New Mexico (2021), New York (2026),\u00a0 Vermont (2013), Washington (2008).have adopted quite similar laws.\u00a0 The District of Columbia (2016) also allows MAiD. Because of the similarity of these laws, collectively they are known as Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD).\u00a0 Montana does not have a MAiD law, but its Supreme Court has held that doctors may administer euthanasia.\u00a0 There is no data from Montana to know to what extent euthanasia has occurred; no reporting is required.<\/span><\/p>

          Limitations in the MAiD laws restrict their applicability to very few of the many people suffering near death.\u00a0 There are three main restrictions.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

          • One has to be terminally ill; that is two doctors must determine that you have, in their opinion, less than six months to live.\n<\/li> \n
          • One has to be mentally competent.<\/li> \n
          • One has to be able the take (\u201cingest\u201d) the medication yourself. <\/li> \n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
            \n\t\t\t\t\t\t

            \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOther limitations are that you must be over 18 and you must be a resident of the state where you will ingest. Due to litigation, Oregon and Vermont have dropped the residency requirement; other states will likely follow.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/span>\n\nThe process for getting the medication is arduous \u2013 another limitation. You must:\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

            • Find a doctor willing to participate in MAiD. (New Mexico allows nurse practitioners to participate as prescribers),\n<\/i>\n<\/li> \n
            • Make an oral request of that doctor.<\/li> \n
            • Consult with that doctor who must determine that: <\/li> \n\n
                \n
              • You are terminal (six months to live or less).<\/li>\n
              • You are competent.<\/li>\n
              • You know you are choosing to end your life.<\/li>\n
              • That you know that you have options other than killing youself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              • \n Make a written request that must be witnessed and signed by two people. \n<\/li>\n
              • \n Make a second oral request at least two days after you made the first. \n<\/li>
              • \n See a second doctor who also must determine that you are terminal and competent.\n<\/li>
              • \n If either one of the two is unsure, then you must see a psychiatrist or licensed psychologist who will make the final determination of competency.\n<\/li>\n
              • \n If all this goes well, the first doctor will electronically send a prescription for the lethal medication to a compounding pharmacy, which, after it is compounded, someone can pick up for you. \n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

                Finally you must ingest the distasteful medication; this\u00a0 usually means swallowing it.\u00a0 There are some work-arounds swallowing, but the bottom line remains the same: no one can help you.<\/p>

                Have you figured out the answer to the riddle yet?\u00a0 What if someone helped you by holding the glass to your lips?\u00a0<\/p>

                There\u2019s your answer: It is not a crime to kill yourself.\u00a0 Suicide used to be a crime \u2013 you could go to jail or lose your property if you failed.\u00a0 But it is a crime to assist someone to commit suicide \u2013 except in the MAiD states where the doctors and others are exempt.\u00a0 However, if the doctor, or your agent, or your family help you by feeding you the medication, the exception under the MAiD laws doesn\u2019t apply; you must take the lethal dose yourself.<\/p>

                Here are some miscellaneous facts about the MAiD laws:<\/p>

                The opponents to MAiD laws are some religious groups, primarily the Catholic church, some politically conservative groups, and some groups of disabled persons (they fear the slippery slope \u2013 some day we may be asked to end our lives).\u00a0<\/p>

                The MAiD laws have been successful. They have survived many legal challenges. The slippery slope arguments have failed \u2013 there is no abuse.\u00a0\u00a0 The valid criticisms of the law are its strict limitations.\u00a0 Many people want MAiD to be similar to Canada\u2019s.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

                • Nurse practitioners can prescribe as well as doctors.<\/li> \n
                • The law applies to the citizens of the whole country but is not available to visitors.<\/li> \n
