A SHORT STAY IN SWITZERLAND Inspired by the true story of Dr. Anne Turner who ended her life at a Swiss clinic after developing a neurodegenerative disease similar to one her husband had died from four years before she was diagnosed.

HOW TO DIE IN OREGON Winner of Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize. Excellent documentary following real-life people taking advantage of Oregon’s Death with Dignity law.

WHOSE LIFE IS IT ANYWAY?  Classic movie of a quadriplegic who wants treatment removed.

RIGHT OF WAY An aging couple (played by Bette Davis and James Stewart) decide to end their lives together after the wife is diagnosed with a debilitating terminal illness.  Their daughter is not receptive to the idea.

AMOUR This excellent, recent French film (with subtitles) which portrays an aging couple failing to have conversations, thereby creating an agonizing situation for themselves and their daughter.

THE SEA INSIDE (Mar Adentro) Based on the true story of a man who was left a quadriplegic after a diving accident.  He campaigned for 28 years to end his life.

THE CARER Terminally ill with a rare form of Parkinsons, this curmudgeonly Shakespearean actor doesn’t want a caregiver.

ON OUR OWN TERMS Moyers on Dying in America. A TV series from 2000 by Bill Moyers. DVDs can be obtained From Films Media Group (Unfortunately not on Netflix).

EYE WITNESS – PERSONAL NARRATIVES OF SELF-CHOSEN AND HUMANE DEATHS, by Dr.Boudewijn Chabot.  Chabot is a Dutch psychiatrist and a world-recognized expert on the three leading right-to-die methods, explored here.   Also included is Physician Assisted Dying.   Professionally produced and excellently dubbed in English.  Goes with his books A Way to Die, and Taking Control of your Death (both listed in Books & Articles ). The DVD can be ordered from his website.

PREVENTING ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Extensive recent medical research clearly indicates that with a good lifestyle you can prevent developing Alzheimer’s disease. What life style changes? (As many as you can do; the more, the better.)

  1. Eat healthy
  2. Exercise regularly
  3. Avoid negative thinking
  4. Do what you enjoy
  5. Have a good sense of humor
  6. Meditate, live mindfully
  7. Socialize
  8. Get outside into nature
  9. Actively relax – listen to music, garden, etc.
  10. Get a massage – even the 15 minute ones
  11. Change your environment – take a trip
  12. Stop multitasking
  13. Turn off electronic devices
  14. Take supplements, especially B complex, C, zinc, magnesium
